A modern man is not only competing with hundreds of others in the real world, but also with thousands of potential rivals in the Internet.
Why are beards so popular right now?
Today’s young people feel the competition with other representatives of the stronger sex, and the pressure from their side, so by beard and mustache they eager to look more attractive and aggressive at the same time. It is the conclusion of the researchers from the University of East Australia.
Anthropologist Cyril Grüter and his colleagues have conducted a research on primates. They found that males that are included in the larger community, have bright attributes that enhance their attractiveness to females and give an advantage over other males.
Orangutans have hanging cheeks, golden snub-nosed monkeys have a growth on the upper lip. According to scientists, a beard plays the same role among humans.
This data was obtained on the basis of the study of 154 species of primates. Bright attributes were found in males living in communities where the physical and social conflicts, as well as the need to seek recognition are common. The higher the competition, the brighter the decals.
“When a person lives in a small group where everyone knows each other, there is no need to stand out, demonstrating the competitiveness by using any “decorations “- Grüter said. – In large groups where individuals are surrounded by strangers, they need an effective demonstration of strength and dignity, and in this situation the various “decorations” come to the rescue. These can include all sorts of jewelry and any items emphasizing their status.”
The researchers also point out that the mustache and beard used to be popular among men. In particular, during the period from 1842 to 1971 they were part of the British fashion, when there were a few women of marriageable age.
By the way, despite the fact that the men are trying to attract the attention of women through an extraordinary appearance, they prefer the fairer sex with the average external look.
