The Algorithm of Smoking Cessation

Many dream to quit smoking, but not all have the willpower to do it. How to finally quit smoking? There are some algorithms for smoking cessation.

1. Imagine yourself already free from dependence, imagine the delight with which you communicate with the people you are playing volleyball in a pleasant company on the beach. Fancy yourself having a healthy, beautiful skin of the face, a light breath, a feeling of health throughout the body. You should think about it for 10-15 minutes every single day.

2. Include a special phrase in your self programming. For example: “The desire to smoke can cause nausea and aversion. I turn on the replacement mechanism each time I want to smoke.”

3. If the desire to smoke is too strong, you can turn on the “I smoke a cigarette” mode. Imagine yourself smoking. Imagine the whole ritual: how you get a pack out of your pocket or from the glove compartment of the car, how you get a cigarette and light it up like addictive. Imagine and feel it mentally: lips are touching the mouthpiece, filling the lungs with smoke, taste, smell – the whole complex of sensations. As a result, after 1-2 minutes of such a session, a person experiences the same sensations as if he had actually smoked a cigarette. Smoking is no longer desirable. For some time. How many times you have to smoke mentally depends on the “smoking experience” and other individual characteristics.

4. It is desirable to find a temporary replacement habit of having something in your mouth. Many are trying to suck lollipops, someone rides a match in the corner of the mouth. And someone sucks the empty cigarette holder. It is advisable to try several options and choose the most suitable.

5. I interpret addiction in the same way as some processes are interpreted in Gestalt therapy: as the circulation of energy flows in the brain. Imagine a flowing stream near your summer cottage which erodes your neat garden beds. You can build a dam. Some people deal with their addictions  going to a psychotherapist. It’s really a way out for some people. Basically, for those who have not read the books, do not use the chances for development, do not have their own will. Everything is fine, but the water in the creek is coming and coming. And it can break through your dam causing a lot of troubles, as it happens sometimes with the psyche of people. Addiction or habit continues to feed off the energy of the invisible unconscious sources as creek is fed by invisible groundwater. What to do? I do not propose to stop the flow of energy of the habit, but to redirect it to a useful channel. You can train your memory or learn a foreign language and so on. You just need to switch to something else. Some advanced people imagine some visual model to help transform one desire into another.

6. Encourage your victory over addiction. According to the passage of each of the periods it is desirable to give yourself a treat. It may be something tasty or something more serious in the future. It can be like shopping and some activities that you put off for various reasons. Such as going to the circus or theater, a trip to the mountains or the lake, and so on.
