Lamborghini. The World’s Most Sought-After Super Sports Cars

The history of Lamborghini  starts in 1963. Ferruccio Lamborghini was the founder of the company, which was to become one of the most well-known luxury cars manufacturer. He was born in 1916, this strong-willed and impetuous man was the leading person in the foundation of the company.

He decided to manufacture a factory of high-end sports cars, Ferruccio was a very wealthy person. During the World War II, he founded the tractor factory, which he launched with energy and determination, creating a major point of reference in this industry. Even more businesses followed, and he had his fortune just at the perfect time, before his 50th birthday. In the early 60’s, he was a successful and powerful man who knew what he wanted, but when he shared his idea on building a super sports car, which will be able to compete with Ferrari, a lot of people considered him as a crazy person. Constructing this type of car was recognized as an extravagance, and something that would never bring any profit.

He started to work on this crazy project in 1962, and already in 1963 he had founded ‘ Automobili Ferruccio Lamborghini’, buying a huge plot of land in Italy, Sant’Agata Bolognese, it was near Bologna,  in about 25 kilometres away, to build a modern and large factory. Thanks to the experience gained during other projects, he was to set up the best facilities for his main goal: a very functional structure which was unrivalled in its field. The  well-let and enormous central building was adjacent to the main office building, so that the management could easily monitor the situation around the production. This was perfect for Lamborghini, who would often go to work on the cars personally when he saw anything that wasn’t done exactly the way he wanted.

The premiere model was put out real fast, cause  Lamborghini had not so much time between the time he decided to build the factory and the date of its official presentation. The event, which was chosen for this was the Turin Auto Show set on November 1963. Since he had a clear idea of what he wished, he didn’t waste time looking for the right assistants. For the engine, he turned to Giotto Bizzarrini, who was a designer of some of Ferrari’s most decent engines. To start up production and for the rest of the car, he hired promising engineers, Giampaolo Stanzani and Giampaolo Dallara. This was a considerable endeavour and there was a lack of time. However, when the 350 GTV was presented to the public, it was recognized as a real masterpiece.

1964 was a special year. The 350 GT was finally done. The inevitable and immediate offshoot of the car, of which 120 pieces were manufactured, was the 400 GT. It has a bigger engine capasity of four litres and it featured the first gearbox designed by Lamborghini himself. Based on the 2-seater body, which was later developed into the 400 GT 2+2 with two occasional seats, the 400 GT model reached the overall production figure of 273 units.

The Countach LP500 in its time was a Lamborghini’s response to the Ferrari Boxer, which was significantly faster than the Countach LP400. Initially, engineers tried to make the turbo version of the 4-liter engine, but due to problems with the cooling system the project was stopped at an early stage. There were also suggestions to the engine, but they eventually settled on an increase of the working volume up to 4754 cc by increasing the size of the cylinder and piston. 5-liter engine required the same amount of air as 4-liter, so the air intakes behind the doors have remained the same. This car combines elegance and modern forms of technology components. Maximum speed is 320 km / h, acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h takes 6 seconds.

Lamborghini 350GT

Presentation of the 350 GT was held in 1964 at the Geneva show, a year after the show of prototype (350 GTV) at the Turin Motor Show. The Lamborghini 350 GT boasted 250 horses under the hood in the engine volume of 3.5 liters, which allowed to gain 240 miles per hour. The very design of the engine was a revolution at the time. Meaningful change starts with the configuration of the car – when the 350 GT was a double, Lamborghini 400 GT could carry four people. Aluminum materials have been replaced by steel. This move increased the weight of the new Lamborghini 400 GT by 180 kg in comparison with its predecessor, which caused the need of engine boosting. Its volume increased to 3929 cm3. It raised the output to 320 hp and allowed the Lamborghini 400 GT to develop a speed of up to 250 km / h. The Lamborghini 400 GT production was carried out in the period from 1966 to 1969.
