Causes of Obesity in Men

Over the last 25 years, the number of people with the problem of obesity has doubled, which is slowly but surely destroying humanity. In 2004, the Journal of the American Medical Association has published more than alarming results of studies: 71% of men aged 21 and older weight way more than normal weight, and 31% are obese. According to the results of similar studies in the seventies of the last century, the percentage was respectively 47% and 15%.

Scientists are in the process of careful research of the causes of obesity, as well as the role of genes in the development of such unpleasant phenomenon. In addition, we study the diet of pregnant women, nutrition and methods of feeding babies. However, experts argue that the stumbling block is hidden in a sedentary lifestyle, which is common to most modern people, as well as the man’s inability to resist the temptation of cheap, fast and varied meal in the modern culture of synthetic fast foods.

The consequences of obesity
Nobody wants to be fat, but a variety of delicious food and an endless variety of entertainment available in the position of sitting in a comfortable chair or lying on a soft couch, do not leave us any choice. But it is so only as long as we do not know about the infinite variety of diseases associated with obesity. We need to find the strength to get up from the bed, open the door and go out for a jog or just to have a walk.

At the age of 35 years the body no longer needs to gain weight, so over time the muscle tissue is gradually beginning to be replaced by fat. Because adipose tissues do not need such a large amount of energy for self-regulation, the body gains weight. If after graduation man exceeded his weight for more than 20 pounds, it is a signal that food and exercise regime is not properly balanced. In this case, it is recommended to replace walking with jogging, as well as to contact the experts for advice to balance your lifestyle.

Please note that while women extra pounds “settle” on the chest, hips and legs, the unnecessary “ballast” in men is concentrated in the area of the belt, where fat is freely circulating in the liver causing problems of metabolism such as diabetes. Excessive body weight increases the risk of heart attack (myocardial infarction), cancer, hypertension and sudden cessation of breathing during sleep, also called apnea. In addition, excess weight can adversely affect the sexual life and complicate the exercise.

Can genes be the cause of obesity?
What makes us gain weight so fast?? The researchers suggest that the cause of obesity may partly consist of a genetic component. However, you can not blame the gene mutations in such a rapid growth in the number of people with the problem of excessive weight. Evolutionary changes do not occur with such speed.

In the US, several pairs of identical twins took part in the experiment. Each of the participants was fed an identical food in clearly limited portions. Results showed that the rate of weight gain between the twins in the pair was almost the same, but differed between the pairs in the group. Some pairs scored only 8 ponds, while others have recovered more than 26 pounds.

Each of us is familiar with at least one person whose stomach seems to be an abyss because he eats a lot and weighs as much as weighed ten years ago. The fact is that some people are more likely to be overweight than others and their relatively high rate of weight gain indicates the risk of obesity later in life.

Scientists still do not know for sure whether there is a direct link between rapid weight gain in infancy and the same phenomenon at a mature age. There are suggestions that the two processes are controlled by the same gene. It is not excluded that the eating habits of many middle-aged people were formed under the influence of their metabolism in childhood.

Genetic factors cannot fully explain such a rapid spread of obesity in humans. Therefore, the main cause of this phenomenon is the excessive consumption of food and lack of physical activity for the efficient use of energy produced. We began to eat more, and a variety of “seating” entertainment significantly reduced the amount of motion in our daily lives.

The bigger your portions, the greater the appetite
Everyone knows that men eat 70% more than women. Experts say that this is due to the primitive instinct of self-preservation: men eat what the body needs, and women eat what their consciousness wants.

The most significant change in eating habits has been the increase of portions in restaurants and cookbooks, which can be traced from the beginning of the seventies of the last century and has increased significantly in the mid-eighties. It may seem that after one or two significantly large servings a man must stop and return to the usual amount of food. The recent studies showed that it is not so.
The experiment was conducted under the direction of Barbara Rolls, the Doctor of Medical Sciences. The researchers gave participants gradually increased servings of food and watched their reaction. It turned out to be shocking: participants ate everything. After 11 days, the participants of the “overeat” group consumed about 5000 calories more than the participants of the “control” group, whose portion consisted of the same food, but in smaller amounts.

The increase in servings of food and beverage will guarantee profits for manufacturers. Our financially motivated community prefers to turn a blind eye to the increase in consumer clothing sizes and the obesity epidemic. Modern promoters can sell us all possible goods and services, not to mention the “aromatic” chips and “saving precious time” eating of fast food. However, the choice is always ours.

How to hold a rapidly growing trend towards obesity with the help of large servings?

In the search for ways to tame the “obesity epidemic” in society, experts have come to a sad conclusion: to get people to eat smaller portions is an impossible task. Therefore, we need to convince ourselves to give preference to products with lower energy value. For example, a deep dish of dry breakfast (flakes, corn sprockets, etc.) contains as many calories as two tablespoons of sweetened oatmeal with nuts and raisins. A vegetable salad will satisfy your hunger, which automatically saves you from wanting to eat something more nutritious.

American nutritionists believe that the results of researches will not be able to stop the trend towards obesity in the United States and other countries. Therefore, the government should intervene in this process and raise taxes on the production of synthetic food, or substantially lower prices for healthy food so that it can compete with fast food.

In search of treatment

Researches in the field of genetic medicine are promising that after a decade or two the medical remedy for obesity will be found. But do not rejoice in advance, as hypothetically more than 25 genes are responsible for obesity. The human body may contain more than 12 of these genes, each of which unequally triggers weight gain. It is unlikely that drug companies invent a medication that could fight all of the above genes at the same time. Furthermore, such preparation must be created based on the individual predisposition to obesity. While scientists are looking for a cure, we just have to eat less and move more.
